Replacing H22 rings question
Im about to change the rings on a h22a engine, is there anything else I need to check or do whilst I have the engine apart? (This is the first time Ive had to change rings) Do bearing clearances need to be checked? any honing? plasti gauge-ing?
Any tips would be appreciated

Do I need different sized piston rings if im honing? Or you mean just a minimal amount to give the new rings a slightly newer surface to bed into.
I thought their might be something a little different with H22 sleeves, does this mean rings are have to be oversized slightly? Or just no honing is required? Id like to know the difference, I believe these are on the F20c also.

depends on the exact size of the bore as it stands now. Honing takes very little material from the cylinder bore so as long as you dont go over the service limit of the standard bore, you will be fine with standard sized rings.

Cheers, I have the workshop manual and measuring tools so I guess i'll strip it down and measure before ordering rings. How do the sleeves being FRM affect the changing of the rings?
you have darton sleeves which are iron, not FRM.
the process of changing the rings is no different than any other motor. the difference lies in the honing process which requires a different crosshatch degree and a different stone.

Sorry for the confusion I just realised in my sig it says darton and thats for my H22 CRX. The EG civic I own is having a stock H22 put in, so I guess that means they are FRM? If they are FRM from stock.

if it's not sleeved then yes you have the frm sleeves from honda. they require a 600grit hone at 45-55 rpm and i forget off hand what the angle for the crosshatching is. it may be 60 i think, and cleaning often between. really strict instructions i know and the main reason it is so hard to have this done is there isn't may shops that have a honing maching that will go so slow. i think if you can simply find a shop that can do the lower rpm required then you should be set. they may not stock 600grit for they're machine as i would imagine that isn't called for often. something else you could do is to install liners (thin sleeves) which i was quoted at 400 for install and final bore here at a local shop. an easy overbore of the sleeves to make room for the "sleeves". they are thinner and don't require an insane amount of work and you can then run any stock ranged size piston either oem, or forged without any problems. not needed but an overlooked "upgrade for a decently built engine.
I see, thanks for the reply
So I am unable to do this in my home garage? I have a honing tool with I believe attaches to a drill, maybe a pillar drill. I have another H22 which has had alot of machine work so im trying to do this block on the cheap
