Replacing front main seal
I just did all this crap on my motor (head gasket, timing belt, radiator, rebuilt carb, etc). I also replaced the front main seal because it looked simple and straight forward since everything was all apart. Well, it ran good after I put it all together but leaks oil like crazy out of the seal. I looked in the shop manual and it says to drop the oil pan, loosten the bearing cap then install the seal. The seal went in fine without dropping the pan. Do I need to drop the pan and loosten the bearing cap to put in a new seal? I put in the seal as far as it would go, is that too far? I need another
Thanks for the help!

Yeah, It matched the old one perfectly. I put enging oil on the inside of the seal where it contacts the crank. Should I have put gasket sealer on the outside of the seal where it contacts the block?
Did you put any around the seal ? How did you get the old one out and the new one it ? Are you sure you did not put any nicks in the block while taking the old one out ?
should you put some kind of gasket sealer on the outer part of the seal?..thats a good question since yours is leaking i guess so.i would like to find that out also and what stuff would work the best, cuz once you put it all back together its kind of a job to replace it again..can anyone let us know please?
Your not suppose to put any type of gasket sealer on it. Your suppose to lube up the inside and the outside with grease, so it slips right in. It sounds to me like you put a knick in the block when you were taking the old one out, or the new one did not set in there properly.

It was leaking between the seal and crank. There is a scratch on the crank. Can I use some 600 or 800 emery cloth to get rid of the scratch? Or is there another way to fix it w/o r & r ing the crank? Thanks!
