Repairing a CF hood
Hey what's up, I was wondering if it is possible to repair a damaged CF hood. The hood is structurally okay, but has deep scratches. If it can't be made to look normal again, is there a way to just fill in the scratches and paint it to match the body. I do not know what make the hood is, just that it is scratched. Any help appreciated
Thats what I was thinking of doing, but someone told me that you couldn't paint carbon fiber hoods. Which I know isn't true, but I thought for some of the older ones there might be some reason.
my cf hood has deep scratches. I was doing a swap and didnt finish so i just laid my my hood on and latched it but didnt bolt it down and we had a hurricane isabel and i didnt think about my hood till i heard it hit my house. so i have deep scratches on my hood so i used some scratch remover and all it did was turn the scratches white and you can see them easier now
a look here how you can do it i work at a bodyshop and my cf hood had the shame **** ,so heres what you do or i did at lease, if you plan on painting the whole hood take some glaze and fill in the scratches, let it dry (1-2min) then take 320 on a DA (palm sander) and sand the whole hood down and go over it with a 3m red scuf pad that should fix it.
if you dont plan on painthing teh hood but just want to fix the scratches on it, take 800 on a DA and sand as much of teh clear off or untill the scratches are out then just reclear the hood, that should work

that's pretty much what the body shop did for my frens cf hood... his got messed up by his ex-chik... said "fuc you ***" in nice flathead tool & knife cutted designs into the cf hood... but yea they just sanded it down to almost the fiber and then shot a crap load of clear onto it and it looks brand new.

If you're just painting the hood, repair the straches and paint it. You will never see them again, nor will it effect the hood so its not a huge issue. If your goal is to repair the hood then take some good looks at the scratches, and see if its something that could be worked out, but in all honesty dont hold your breath on saving the finish. There is nothing wrong with painting to your car, as long as the hood saves you some weight.

Actually I did do a search and nothing came up. but I'm also a trial user so I wasn't able to post in appearance. I think the search just was too specific, or the forum was worded differently or something. I'm pretty sure the cracks/scratches go all the way to the CF, plus the backing has come off the CF, so my friend and i are going to fiberglass the entire back of the hood which hopefully will push the backing down and give the hood some support, then we're gonna buff the clearcoat down as far as we dare, fill the scratches as best as we can, and then get it set to paint.. Apparently what happened was when the backing came off the hood, wind got inbetween the two layers, and started cracking up the hood. I'll post before/after pics and whether or not it was successful. At the very least, this should be a good learning experience.
