Default Remote Start add on

Any of you guys ever added remote start to your cars when they didn't come with it?

Experiences? Is it horrible? Do they work well?

Discuss!

New question, how hard is it to do these on a manual transmission?

Yes. Some guy made a 200 buck kit that is plug and play for the GTR. Press lock three times on the OEM key fob and it fires up.

Does it work well? I know they have kits for it, just wondering about the quality of them.

Works great. It just a simple module with a harness that connects in to the ECU. Should have come factory like this. http://www.carkitcompany.com/nissan-gtr/remote-start

hmmm.... doesn't look too bad.

My lady loves mustangs for some reason. Not sure why but she does. My clutch needs replaced so I left my car at work and took an 07 mustang home over the weekend and she fell IN LOVE with it so I'm thinking about getting her one but I know she wants remote start.

GTR isn't a manual doe. It's an automatic.

They're not bad to install. If you do the installation right they work well. Don't use scotchloks and you wont have a problem.

It's harder than a regular autostart install in that you need wire in the door switches and parking brake and sometimes there will be a clutch start bypass. It's certainly not impossible though. We used to do them when I worked for Honda.

Yes but I'm not putting it in a GTR

AC. Hate getting in the car and the first two minutes are spent cooling down. Rather remote start before walking out of the house.

I mean she would love for the heater purposes too in the winter, but that's because at 50 she thinks it's freezing.

I appreciate the info. Just out of curiousity, I assumed the clutch start bypass, but why a switch in the door?

It's to arm the system. Some are different than others, but normally you set the parking brake, shift into neutral and shut the car off, open the door and exit the vehicle. If you open the door again it disarms the autostart (this is in case someone puts the vehicle in gear, if the door doesn't open after it's been shut the first time no one has tampered with the vehicle) There's always a procedure to arm an autostart for a manual, but some are different than others.

What would happen if the car was left in 1st gear and somebody turned the remote start on? Would the car start going?

A friend had it on his ITR back in the day. Took ITR to tire shop for new tires.
When he came to pick up the car he started the car and they had left it in first gear. It rolled into the shop and lightly damaged his car.

So yes, it would start going.

Anybody know if there is some kind of switch you can get to kill that? Like where the remote start wouldn't work if it was in gear?

Need a sensor that detects if it's in gear to override the start sequence

Need to have it installed so it only starts when the handbrake is engaged, I had one on my ITR it came with the Viper alarm and it worked really well. To activate it I had to step on the brake pedal and engage the handbrake before I turned the car off, that was the only was it would start with the remote.

Yeah man - it's called not installing it.

If you are this worried about it happening, it's going to happen.

That's an untrue statement. If safeguards can be put in place to prevent it then that's not true. Anyway, somebody pm'd me about a specific model one that's made for manual cars where the remote start won't activate unless the car is in neutral. I already found it and it looks incredibly safe.

DEI brand remote starts are designed to work safely with manual transmission cars. For it to remote start, you have to go through a e-brake/foot brake/door opening sequence before exiting the car to prevent in-gear starts.

People that have started the car while in gear had the unit installed improperly with features bypassed, or an older system.

One of the reviews on a viper one complained about starting the car with the AC on to cool down the summers puts too much draw on something. Any truth to this guys?
