Default Rebuilding a tranny

ok i got a d16a6 tranny. it needs all new gears and synchros. how hard is it to do myself? like is it all just bolting it down in the right spot or are there special tools needed? please let me know. thank you. also how much am i looking to spend doing it myself as oppose to taking it somewhere?

Default Re: Rebuilding a tranny (H4 Project)

It's not necessarily hard, but it is intimidating when you open the case and start tearing things apart. Some of the items in there, such as gears are pressed on, so you will have to have a press to remove them as well as put them back on. Some, but not all of the bearings are pressed onto the main and countershafts as well. You also have to worry about shims and clearances when reassembling it.

It would certainly be cheaper for you to rebuild yourself as opposed to having a tranny shop do it. I don't know how much exactly all the gear sets w/synchros are, but I would suspect several hundred dollars to get all new gears, synchros, bearings, etc. You might be ahead to try and find another tranny instead.
