Default really weird idle problem with lsvtec

Ok so i got everything sorted out and plugged in. I start the car and it has a super high idle. I tried the finger over the iacv hole and the idle doesnt drop. So i waited until my fan turned on to check it again because thats what the book suggests. So the fan turned on and about 7 seconds ofter the fan turned on the idle dropped to about 1500 and it sounded like a shitty idle. Then it dropped to about 500 or so and it was like a domestic camming out. It was like duh duh duh duh duh. it sounded bad. So i tried to push on the gas and it had no responce what so ever. And i know the throttle has responce because i have reved it up before. So the idle eventually went back to 2500 then dropped to 500 again. What the hell is going on with this? thanks for any suggestions

i actually did clean the iacv to just make sure it wasnt that and it ended up being part of the problem but not the solution. It still idles like a domestic and it smells like gas really bad. Its weird cuz when it idled really high at 2500 the throttle would respond fine. But now that its down to about 1500 the throttle takes a second to respond and its not smooth going up, it goes up really fast then it lower than 1500 then shoots back up to 1500. Could this be timing? I tried to advance and retard the timing with little progress. Please help

In a situation like this I would start with making sure the base idle was correct. Unplug the IACV and see if you can set the idle to between 450 and 500. Plug it back in and clear the code. I would also check things that would keep the ECU in default and running rich such as the ECT sensor. If the engine is warm and your idle is 1500 and above without surging, then I would suspect the ECU is in default. Check for 5 volts to the ECT sensor with key on engine off. Warm resistance should be around 300 ohms.

well i had the head in my car before and it ran fine, idle was fine and everything. Although i cleaned the iacv and it was fine before i just dont see why the idle would be off by that much. I was thinking something ignition wise, or maybe timing, but i would have to be off by quite a few teeth for it to sound like that i think. Oh and what is the ECT sensor, im not familiar with that. And what do you mean by surging?

oh, and if the head gasket was on upside down would that effect how it runs? ive heard that it will leak major oil if it is, but i have a feeling that it is. It has a little bit of the gasket sticking out the side of the engine, which doesnt look right. Would this help or am i wrong?

just line the white mark on the crank pully up with the pointer on the lower timeing belt cover then the crank is at tdc.
