Default quick tranny questions

as you guys know something on my car is ******* up...im going to the tranny shop tomorrow and i just want to ask you guys a couple of questions cause i dont trust shops. they will try to get you to buy **** you dont need. If you dont...i can shift my car without touching the clutch. I start up the car go into first and when i let off of the clutch the shifter pops back into nuetral. today i went outside and seen a peice of cable hanging from the car( I wonder what it is), but anyways here are my questions.....
What exactly is the shift linkage??
What is a pressure plate?
Its a hydraulic clutch so what do you guys think is wrong.
I need answers ASAP seeing that im going to the shop and i want to have a little knowledge on the subject.
thanks guys.

First thing you should do is see where that cable leads, and where it possibly connects to.

Shift linkage is the part that connects the tranny to the shifter... it does the gear selection (very vague, but I don't know a more specific one).

Pressure plate is what goes over the clutch disc. When you push the clutch pedal, the pressure plate is what pulls the clutch disc off the flywheel. It wouldn't be the pressure plate, since then you wouldn't be able to take it out of gear or move the shifter into a gear.

i think its the shift linkage cable, cause everything else works.. i can move the shifter, cut the car on, i just cant stay in gear when i put it in first it jerks back to nuetral like a cable popped or something. i wonder how much shift linkage and installation will cost??
