I am having trouble getting my car smogged. It is a 98 ek with a swap running an obdI ecu. As far as getting smogged for a obdII car is there any difference from obdI? Do they have to plug in the code reader and is it different for obdIIa/b? Would they be able to smog it if they did not care about visual inspection? Basically what I am asking is if I took another car to get smogged for my car would they be able to pass it? Thanks in advance. I know ive been asking for hookups and I am sorry if I am bothering people but I thought this was a website designed for situations like this. Thanks again.
you need the obd2 ecu and all applicable sensors. For the obd and obd2 version 2 vehicles they plug into a diagnostics plug that reads directly from your computer. If they are trying to read form an Obd1 ecu it wont work and you will fail. Get all the apporpriate smog equipment and ecu from the motor you swapped in and you will pass. HTH

My question is what if I take another car same year and model, maybe lx or ex civics. Is there a difference when smogging the two? If a place didnt care about the visual inspection all they cared about is if it passes will it work? Or does it have to be the same exact ecu? Thanks in advance.
it would need to be the same year make and model as your vehicle now. If oyu have a 99 you would need a 99-00 if its a civic. If its a 96-98 then you need a 96-98.
you cant do that
#1 they check the plates
#2 they scan the barcode on the drivers side door jam and if the vin that comes up with the plate dosent match the vin they scan you are screwed.
and if you use your friends plates and car you will smog his for free because its all connected to the vin number.
you will not pass smog unless you are running OBDII

AND #3 it is a $10,000 fine for doing it (to the smog tech)

Here in TX, the fine could be as simple as $500, maybe get your license revoked, or you could get sent to Huntsville state prison. It's not worth it to me as an inspector, and I wish people wouldn't post **** like this. Do it right, or keep it on a trailer.
