Default pure oxygen to increase power?

so the air we breathe and our engines use is 2/3 nitrogen and less than 1/3 o2. if you ran a tank of pure o2 to your intake would this increase power? i know that a tank of o2 could only hold so much, and the engines use lots of air, so there would be limitations. but would this be worth looking into? at least you can't mess anything up, i mean its o2. maybe instead of running n20 you can run o2. thoughts?

I actually thought about this as well, and posted a question on it at the CRX resource. There's no direct link to it, go to

http://resource.crx.org/discussions.html

follow the links to techhnical on the left, then topics from last year on the upper right, then scroll down to 12-19-01 . The topic is Chem ? about nitrous oxide

That's all I can offer.

can you say kaboom. O2 is highly flamable. beyond populr belief N20 is not dangerous compared to what O2 can do.
kris
correct. n20 has to have nitrogen split from oxygen in order for it to do anything. o2= kaboom

Oxygen by it self is not flamable.

yeah, i read up on the crx resource. too risky. gotta go with n20. well, maybe i'll see about using an air compressor for forced induction then.

This would be the most expesnive way. To get PURE O2 would cost you about 200 bucks for a 10lb bottle, compared to N2O which you can get for about 30 for 10 lbs. Guess why noone is doing it.

Yea...if you do that you might get a flashing warning on your engine management system saying "Warning: Danger to intake manifold."

I see everyone here failed high school chemistry. The rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the concentration of the reactants (or the concentration of the reactants raised to some exponent). Oxygen by itself is not flammable but it is necessary for combustion. The atmosphere is only about 20 percent oxygen. The concentration of oxygen in pure oxygen is 100%. So even if the rate dependance of the gasoline combustion reaction was only linearly dependant on o2 concentration, pure oxygen would increase the rate of combustion 5 fold. Having seen the difference first hand in what pure oxygen can do to an ordinary combustion reaction I would not recommend using it.

It will also promotes corrosion. Think of all the rust at 100% concentration...

Ya, Actually it bonds to aliminum.

Yeah but 02 with gasoline is highly explosive... thats why cars run...

for example... have you evey blowed onto a smoldering fireplace?
what happens... you are not introducing anymore heat or fuel.. but you are adding more 02 .... then a flame pops up...

Nitrous oxide does the same thing.. but the nitrogen is an inert gas.. and helps cool things down. The oxygen in the nitrous oxide helps promote combustion

If you try 02 you're liable to kill yourself and others. There's too much potential for the combustion to occur outside of the combustion chamber ie. lines, solenoids, intake manifold etc.

Nitrous works because it actually takes alot of heat and pressure to free the oxygen from the nitrogen. This occurs where you want it to - in the combustion chamber. That's why the Nitro guys like melting spark plugs. A NGK rep told me about this and that Honda hired outside consultants to give them advice on spark plug technology for methanol combustion which likes to be "hammered".

pure o2 burns too hot. you'll melt holes right thru the pistons
