Default Programming chips

Would anyone be able to lead me in the right direction of programming chips? I want to get into reprogramming chips and was wondering what hardware and software would be required. I'm not asking for a whole lesson here, just a lead into it. Like maybe a link to a companies site for the purchase of software. Anyone???

Are you looking to get into actually tuning or are you going to buy a burner to make 'super' chips that are supposedly copies of big name tuning companes. These chips are great if you want to be able to say "I'm running a sp00n chip" but they suck if you actually want to get any performance out of your car.

I actually want to work with programming the chips to get good performance out of them. It's actually for a buddy of mine. I don't know if he'll understand the stuff since he isn't all that computer literate when it comes to programming, but he does know cars and how to tune them.

not to make a lesson of it but here's some info to help you out. The chips the obd1 cars use to read the fuel/timing maps is called 29c256 . Pretty much any programmer that will program this chip can be used. I opted for a needham's emp-20 because of its versatility and support for other chips...it was ~$100. You can get a programmer much cheaper if you are only concerned with programming a certain type of chip such as the 29c256.

TOP853 is my latest burner, and I'm very pleased. No switches or anything like that, just plug and play USB, no external power required. If you feel like erasing the UV chips, just get a cheapie UV eraser from ebay, I have a Spectroline PE-140T that never fails me. The hardware isn't much, just buy the right stuff the first time. If you don't have soldering equipment expect a small amount there too.
