Default Problems

Okay I drive a 99 SI and earlier today im on my way home and while trying to shift into gears its hard to go into the gears. Thats the first problem. The second problem is when sitting still in 1rst the car seems to want to cut off. When I eventually pull off the car jerks very hard like something is loose. I checked the motor mounts and nothing is loose or cracked. Clutch, linkage anything? Thanks in advance guys.

the clutch. it would explain why the car wants to cut out in 1st at idle. it is partly engaged and needs more gas too keep running also the same reason why it is so hard to get in and out of gear, the clutch is partly engaged.

I was thinking it was the clutch but shouldn't I smell the clutch burning?

Well I tried to drive the car and now trying to put it in 1st it won't even shift into gears. I kept trying and it did eventually go into gear but sitting in 1st it still tries to cut off. I'm really thinking its the clutch now.

My best bet would be a loose flywheel bolt maybe.....

the tricky part is that your car won't idle in 1st gear

Yeah thats what confuses me is how it acts in 1st. Another tricky part is that when the car is off I can shift through the gears with know problem. Today I tried to drive it and it with the clutch pushed to the floor it wouldn't go into the gears at all. I might add that I have 89,000 miles on the car and it is the stock clutch still on the car.

They problem you have is the damper springs. Check it out, one of them came loose and is now stuck in between the friction plate and flywheel. Thats why you can't put it into gears when the car is running and with it off you can, because the friction plate is not disengaging to alow the synchros to slow the speed gears down for the engagement of the gear selected.
