So I picked up a 2004 Civic that was supposedly only needing the head gasket changed. No prob there at all, did all the machining work needed. After a few hours i had everything back in and all new gaskets on the top end. The engine fired up first time.
So as the motorfFired up first try, I noticed two issues. Misfire 2 & 4, which for me means i need to new ign coils...
LOL just when you think you got a good deal you find yourself pump more money into the project. So i'm also hearing a slight knock. As of now i don't have the funds to go get the crank turned and new bearings. I was thinking of find which rod is having the issue and why. And if I can just replace the bearing.
Now when replacing the bearing, do i need to get the oem bearing thickness from the engine block stamp, and then plastigauge it to see if i need to go with an oversized bearing??
I know this isn't the way to do it RIGHT, but with the budget i'm on i have no other choice to either give the 6 dollar bearing replacement a shot, or buy a used engine with no issues.

Yes you can do it. But not recommended. Depending on how bad the bearing was spun. But nobody on here is gonna tell you that or admit to it. This little trick has been done before. Probably since the invention of the gasoline engine,LOL. If you still have a slight rod knock, it means the rod as been stretched, big bore end.

Pulled the pan and inspected the rod ends for play, couldn't see anything major. Last night I pulled the motor and will be sending it to my local machine shop for inspection. The guys quoted me 200.00 on the low end all the way to 500 high end. So for the prices i'm getting it's a great deal all around. I mean 0 mileage block, ready for another 217k.
