Default PLEASE HELP!!! Engine making noise and performance prob.

Okay guys, if I ever needed help then now is the time!!! I'm reaching out to my fellow honda-tech brothers to benefit from their wisdom. Well I'm currently running an all motor B-20/V-Tec setup in my 93 Eg. This is a setup that my friend had in his car previously and just had the pistons replaced. The head has been squeezed on far in the past, and both the block and head have been boosted on. All I am runnin on it is a DC 4-1 header, and an AEM CAI. I've had the setup for about 3 months now and at first it was running like a dream (sohc 1.6 to dohc 2.0 = ), but just recently it has been making a clicking/knocking noise. I am no engine guru but my first guess is that its a rod knock but asking my honda guru friends leads to a possibility of valve train problems, plus the fact that the pistons are relatively new. After inspecting all valve springs with no problems, and replacing a water pump the problem is still existent as ever. I did notice that it comes from the driver's side of the engine, and when I drive past wall on that side it is as dominat as ever. I also noticed a drop in power, and a not so consistent VTEC, and today I looked at my engine again and noticed some oil around the side that makes the noise, like around the oil pump, or idle barring. The only other thing is that I have a crappy weld O-2 sensor in my downpipe and an exhaust leak due to this.

So what do you guys think? Bad cams? Bad valves? Something with the block? I just don't want to end up buying parts for stuff I don't need, and paying labor to tear apart the engne to no avail? Please if anyone else has come across this problem or if you think you know what it could be please let me know!!!

Thanks in advance...

Do a compression check and find out where the leak is coming from.

You got a GSR head?

Yes I have a GSR head. Would that make any difference vs a B16 head? Are GSR's more prone to problems? And on the comment above regarding the compression test, would that diagnose a problem if it's valvetrain issues, or does this sound like something more in the block?

if VTEC isnt engaging and you area hearing 'knocking' check your oil. You could be pretty low. Your oil pump could be failing also. One thing a lot of CRV/LS VTEC builders skimp on is the oil pump. They leave the original in their. You should be using ITR (same as GSR and Si).

You might want to check your LMA's. They are known to go bad. There are two springs in them. One big and on small. The small one sometimes binds.

Hey don't mean to be a post *****, but thanx for all the info guys.

NAEBP00Si - I've checked my oil numerous times, but maybe it could be the oil pump? I did notice some excess oil on that side so that could be it, but don' t know why it would make the knocking noise. Might as well try to fix this first since it beats tearing down a whole motor to find the fix.

Rocket - What are the LMA's? If you're talking about the valve springs then we already checked all of these with no problems.

LMA = Lost Motion Assemblies. They are the little nipple looking thing under the vtec rocker.
