Default piston ring question

how can you tell if the piston ring is causing problems? what are the usual and sure symptoms of it? is there any sure ball method of testing to see if the rings are responsible aside from compression and leakdown test?

, i think a compression test would be the easiest though

unfortunately oil consumption is something you cant miss if you
regularly check it. also if it turns BLACK FAST i.e. in like 150-500miles,
your rings are seeping burnt material into the engine oil due to wear.

for instance, if your oil has 1200 miles on it and it is still clear in color...
chances of worn piston rings? not much.

omg! the rings might be screwed and the engine was newly overhauled 3 1/2 months ago. i was kinda hoping its turbo seal coz i don't want to go through it again.

yes my car is turbocharged(posted this in FI forum but didn't get much help) and during cold start the car won't blow any blue smoke. but if i drive around it, with or without boost, and then stop the car to wait for the light or just park it and have it idle it will smoke. if i drive it harder with boost it will smoke the more but during cold starts or if i let the car rest a bit or if i let the car idle for few more minutes longer the smoke will subside.

i checked my charge pipes and compressor housing but there's no traces of oil at all. so everything is in the exhaust side.

there's no smoke coming out of the dipstick hole, sparkplugs are not oil soaked, breather filter is fine but it's only two months and my oil is already dirty(don't know if that's normal for 2months). i also touch the inside of my tailpipe and it got a black, sticky stuff like a thick black ink.

are you using your stock rings and pistons? i know turbos are really hard on those stock pieces.

I would say change your oil, drain it to flush it... install new with a new filter and then monitor the oil. if it starts out clean then gets black fast, you have a problem with the rings for sure.

i'm going to change the oil and filter tomorrow and see what happens.

i'm planning to have it compression tested and leakdown as well.

thanks guys.
