i have a 91 civic awd wagon w/ a d16. the car is obd-0

no turbo or any forced induction, just bone stock. every time i accelerate past about 2500rpm, sounds like ping in the exhaust, and the more i accelerate, the worst it gets. it's so bad i can only put-put through back streets, i cant get on highways or pass cars cuz the car lacks so much power...

ive checked the timing, and with a timing gun.
i've replaced the fuel filter.
plugs, cap and rotor are new.
distributor is in default position, not advanced or retarded.

i do get a check engine light, the code blicks 2 long, 17 short.
those blinks dont even register as anything legit, but ive sat there for too long making sure im counting them right, and thats exactly how it blinks, each and every time.

if anybody has any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it!

 

try putting 93octane in to see if that helps. try colder plugs.

also carbon buildup can cause red hot coals which preignite the mixture. you might try some cheesy deposit cleaner from autozone also. don't bet on that helping but its cheap enough.

 

that's what what i have in it right now, 93 octane....

a friend was telling me it might be a clogged cat. cuz it sounds like a nasty exhaust leak under the hood when i accelerate, but there is no exhaust leak, thats why i think it must be ping or a form of detonation.

 

make the noise happen, immediately shut the car down and check the plugs.
