Physical indicators that show one has a Type R head?
i have a b18c1 bottom end and was told the head was Type R. It says pr3-4 and I believe it was made in 1990 but I could be reading the production date wrong. I don’t see green paint by the distributor but I know the engine was wire brushed and painted so I don’t want to go off that. Is there any other way to tell and if it’s not what is it actually and the difference between this one and type R?
There is no way to tell from the casting number. PR3 is the casting number for many of the DOHC VTEC engines. the - number is the casting mold version #. Green paint has been a reliable option to distinguish them. The only other way is to assume it has OEM cams and measure them out, then compare cam details. that can narrow it down, but only if you know the cams are original.
THAts where myproblem comes in is the engine isn’t oem internally. I but the circle codes by the left of the headers starts with a “ 9 0 “ so I’m assuming it’s made in 90. Would that mean it’s not type R or is it still possible? It’s been driving me crazy and everyone I ask says something different and no one is technically wrong. It’s hard too tell
