phenolic intake gasket - thickness?
hey all, just getting my own phenolic intake manifold gasket sorted,
(phenolic = A heat-resistant plastic)
the guy who is going to be cutting it thinks 6-10mm thickness would be better than 2mm.
will a 10mm phenolic spacer between the head and manifold affect anything - such as the injector spray patterns??? what about increasing runner lenght?
anyone with experience???
how thick is the Hondata gasket?
t..
PS where else can i use phenolic gaskets? the FITV?

The one I am testing is about 1/8th inch. He is right about thicker, for some materials, being more resistant, and alos right that it may effect injector spray. On the flip side, you can use a more heat resistant material, which is what I choose to do...

well, he' s come back saying at 4mm it should be fine.
the material is 'very good insulator' - so should be able to handle it.
he has also raised the idea of drilling out the manifolds stud holes and using phenolic tubes that separate hte manifold completely from the head studs.
will there be any noticable effect on the injector spray patterns with a 4mm spacer?
TIA,

i would suggest installing the injectors onto the mani and visually inspecting how much do they protrude from the manifold. i doubt that there will be more problems than a little notching on the gasket won't fix.
now where did you get the material for that? and what is the name of the particular plastic compound?
man, i love DIY'ers!!

good page eh? thanks very much!
the material is known to me only as 'phenolic'
"The descendants of Bakelite are still widely used as PHENOL-FORMALDEHYDE under the generic name of PHENOLIC Plastics"

very cool
, do keep us updated on all. i am now in search of some good phenolic sheets to make my own gasket as well. gotta find the longer intake studs as well, anyone knows the pitch and diameter of them?
