Default Overheating problem....

Okay my problem is this .... the temp guage in my car will jump all over the place. I will be driving normally then it will slowly raise all the way to the red. I have plenty of coolant, oil, and the rad fan works. If i turn on the heat in the car the temp will go back down to its normal range, right in the middle of the guage. Now it is summer time so i dont' want to have the heat on all the time. If i check the engine while the guage is in the red, it doesn't seem too hot at all.

any suggestions on how i can fix this ?
thanx

sounds like the thermostat simply isn't really opening. The temp goes down while driving at a higher speed, right?

Also, sounds like it may be the original thermostat. That sounds about right since it's a '93. Even if you don't need a new one, it wouldn't hurt to replace it and the radiator cap...both of 'em are cheap insurance.
