Default OT: Torque wrenches

What do you guys use? How often do you get them recalibrated? I can buy a new craftsman for like $70 and to get it recalibrated it costs even more than that??????? Suggestions?

I have a 1/2inch snap on torque wrench and a mac 3/8inch torque wrench..I've gotten them re-calibrated 2 times. I love them both, but i dont have any experience with craftsman torque wrenches.

dude, not to sound like an ***, but you shouldn't even have to get a craftsman recalibrated, they have lifetime any reason replacement warranties. If you don't have any shame, just go up to the counter, say it isn't working right, and ask for a new one. Its funny seeing people dig through bins and yard sales for broken wrenches and screwdrivers, if you have the handle they will replace it.

What's up with no one knowing what a torque wrench IS? I went to home depot and lowe's asking for torque wrench/impact gun and they just gave me blank stares. I had to find them on my own and all they had were like 200dollar ones. Im sure there were others but I couldn't find them...

i used to have a $60 husky torque wrench from home depot..... 3/8". i loved it, had it for 18 months........ two weeks ago it didn't "pop" at 15lb-ft and i snapped one of my cam retaining bolts. last weekend i took it back to home depot and they let me exchange it for the bigger (by like 6 inches) 1/2" version...... cost me 9 pennies.

its only on their "hand tools" but i guess teh torque wrench is a little different from that, someplaces might get you a new one depending on the worker if they know whats up

I have a Snap-On 3/8's one that reads from 5fp to 75fp and I'm about to purchase another 3/8's Snap-On torque wrench, but I'm unsure of what settings I want at the moment.

The 3/8's that I have now cost $200 and I love it!

torque wrenches and impact guns are totally different. torque wrenches measure the amount of torque(n/mm or lb/ft) being placed on a nut/bolt. impact guns are crazy "stubborn-bolt-getter-offers".

I thought that it was a lifetime warranty on the craftsman until I read the fine print. They only have a year on mechanical probs and 90 days on calibration. I need to by a 3/8 drive pretty soon and am trying to decide if it is worth the extra money to buy a snap-on or just go with another craftsman.

Craftsman is good and they were the original company I was going to use, but after using my friends snap-on compared to his craftsman......there was a noticable difference in the quality between the two.

I know snap-on is expansive, but I think it's worth it when it comes down to tools such as a torque wrench.

I will say that all my hand tool, compressor and impact is craftsman.

I am upgrading to a snap-on 1/2 and 3/8 impact though. Those things are serious!

Get the 1/2" Ingersoll Rand 2135Ti. Perhaps the best impact wrench on the market today! It may be a bit cheaper than the Snapon, too.

As for a torque wrench, my Craftsman 1/2" works just fine for tightening lugs and suspension bolt, which seems to be all I ever use it for right now. If I were to start rebuilding engines, then I'd upgrade to something a little better...

FYI - many top fuel dragster / funny car teams have their $1000 torque wrenches calibrated after every two motor tear downs - after every event basically - spend the money on a quilty item you can give it to your grandchildren in 50 years. my only system is that I have one bolt tightened to 75lbs and I take my wrench every couple months and set to 75 and see if it will turn at all - cant afford to check alibration all the time.
