No, the tranny does not have to be removed. Its very simple. Here are the steps:
Tools Needed: 12mm socket, 10mm socket, 12mm wrench, torque wrench.
*Unplug O2 Sensor
*Unbolt Header/Exhaust Manifold
*Remove Flywheel dust cover
*Remove Oil pan
Dont forget to torque the oil pan down to specs. Make sure when you tighten the oil pan you start from the middle, then work your way out.

edit... ok I found this:

Gotta take off those braces from the block to the bellhousing, #13 & #14.
Day before you start, lay the oil pan gasket out flat, so it isn't trying to curl itself up while you install the new pan.
The old gasket might have steel rings around some of the bolt holes. Make sure you don't leave those behind, stuck to the bottom of the block.
Some people (me) use a tiny amount of sealant at the seams of the rear-main seal (#7) & the oilpump (not shown) at the front. Some people use it all around the gasket. Make sure you don't use too much, or it lubricates the gasket & makes it squirm around & leak.
Oil pan bolts take a pretty low torque (look it up?). If you overtighten them, the rubber gasket squirms around & leaks.
