It catches the oil vapors from your engine and collects them, preventing them from going back into your intake manifold.

Bump, because this is a good thread. I'm interested in the advantages too... considering doing this mod.

hey guys, catch cans are important especaily for LS/VTEC and CRVTEC as the factoy ones are made obsolete.

i have just finished making my own catch can from an old air conditioning filter canister plus a few parts and am doing the write up as we speak,

i will post my link this afternoon...

HTH,

By keeping the oil saturated vapor from going back into the intake, you effectively increase your octane. It isn't the only benefit, but the one that made me get one. I have the Greddy, but this will show you basics:

no, you effectively stop your octane from decreasing.

much the same, but probly should make the point...

PS the Greddy one is sexy...

OK, I stand corrected. It keeps your octane from decreasing, effectively increasing your octane rating.

kinda the same thing. i feel safer using 89 with advanced timing. somehow i like to think 89+can ~ 91 + no can. there is no basis for this whatsoever, i just like to think things i tweak are actually useful hahah. esp. since i dont even have a knock sensor and never hear anything either.

heres mine

In the thread posted in the previous post, Jeff C says:

I pieced my kit together and it is similar to Endyns.
You can get the Moroso dry sump breather tank from Jegs.com.
I got the fittings from Lowe's (home improvement place) and from a pipe/brass fittings store.
The hose I used came from Home Depot, SKU #705065, and is high pressure vinyl braided clear tubing, very strong.
I think it all cost about $85 usd total.
Yes, the drain back feature is very crucial unless you like adding 1/2 quart every 500 miles or so.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the oil that would get recirculated under normal conditions (i.e. without a catch can) just get burnt up anyway? So doesn't that mean the whole "adding 1/2 quart every 500 miles or so" sentance make no sense?

Why is everyone recirculating it????

Why not just put the hose directly to the ground, and then mount the suction hose to a different area, with a small screen on the end?

Anyone thought of that?

or plumb it direct to the exhaust pipe like old school hot rodders used to?

hmmmm, i can think only of the environment when you talk like that sir...

huh? now you arent making sense,

your car should have a catch can, what engine do you have? GSR? it does...

you will only have to add oil if your catch can is not working properly or is non-existant such as in the LS/VTEC or B20VTEC situation, like i said above.

Jeff C has B20VTEC and i think that he was referring to his situation in his post, ie
Yes, the drain back feature is very crucial unless you like adding 1/2 quart every 500 miles or so.
before and after i guess...

make sense?

You could but then you would have to add oil every so often.

Since I have a crvtec, I had to add a catch can setup. The reason I had to keep adding oil is because the catch can would collect a lot of oil, but I did not have it setup to drain back into the motor. Every time I would gas up or everytime I thought about it, I would have to manually drain the catch can of the oil otherwise it would fill up and get sucked back into the intake manifold. There would be about 1-1.5 cups of oil drain out every couple hundred miles of so...that sucked. I hated having to add oil. Now that I have it draining back into the motor it is 97% better.

I thought they were screws too. Just use a jar of mixed screws, tehn if you ever need a screw, you have a jar full. Actually I heard what works best is BBs. THe steel wool can come apart (tiny pieces) and get sucked into the intake.
