hey i just put my minime in my 96 civic ex and the idle on it is crazy. when i start it up it goes up to 3000rpm and then after a min or two it comes down and then starts this **** where it idles up and then idles down and it doesnt stop, it just keeps doing it. whats going on?? help me
Idle Air Control valve. It allows air to bypass the throtle plate to maintain the optimum idle speed. It is controled by the ecm. What intake manifold do you have on the engine?
testing as per the book
1. get car to normal operating temp (hold accelerator at 3k till fan comes on)
2. unplug wiring to IACV ...... Idle speed should drop or stall (if not the IACV is bad)
3. "if intermittent problems still persist.... poor connections or damaged wires"
4. See if valve clicks when voltage is applied (only apply voltage long enough to make it click)
5. Check voltage at plug + start tracing for wiring problems

try taking the iac valve off. there are two holes for the air...make a gasket for the bolt holes and then you want the rest to cover the two air holes. tighten the valve down with the gasket inbetween the manifold and the iacv. you are basically closing those passages and that is all. then just keep the iacvalve plugged up and it should help you out a lot. just try it out.
-make sure also to bleed the coolant good.
-also, does this surging go on when the motor is warm? if it does, then my fix
proposition should work for you.

Check thoroughly for vacuum leaks. If there are none then set the warm idle speed without the IAC connected. When you disconnect the IAC it should idle at ~750 RPM (warm engine). If it does not then adjust the idle spped screw top rear of throttle body until it does(in lower out higher). I have found this to be the case 3 out 4 times when I have encountered idle problems. A through throttle body cleaning is also a good idea before you do any thing.
