Occupant Position Detection System
Can someone please explain the OPDS sytem and function to me and why it would trip the srs light. I am inquiring for a lady who needs help. I also need to know how mush a unit will cost and if it is diffulcult to replace.
Thanks!!!!!
Thanks!!!!!
It's used to detect the size of the occupant in the passenger seat. If it detects a child sitting in the seat, it will not deploy the airbag.
The reason the OPDS set a diagnostic code is because it has an internal failure relating to electrical interference. The updated part should eliminate this problem.
On a side note, just because you have a 15-1 15-2 or 15-3 does not automatically mean you have a faulty OPDS unit. There are other possible causes.

the opds unit is in the passanger seat. u have to remove the seat and then the seat covers to get access to the unit. its kinda pain in the ***. i beleive that the opds unit can get tripped if u have a object like a purse or a box tat doesnt weigh a certain amount for the light to turn on.
no need to remove seat...remove backing...pull from the bottom so u dont break the plastic clips up top...OPDS unit cost..im not sure..but its usally the Unit it can be set off by a labtop or some type of eletroic device...usally the unit tho..the unit is on the side of the seat closest to the center concole..I replace these all the time at honda and its usally the OPDS Unit ..not sensor GL

So I've got two different dealers quoting me two different things.
1) One says just replace the sensor.
2) The other says replace the unit. THEN replace the sensor if necessary.
What's up with that? Is the sensor not part of the unit? If they replace the unit, aren't they covering all options? I'm confused.
And why wouldn't I just replace the sensor? Here B20luda said that it's usually the unit, so what should the user like me do to not pay many times for one problem?
Thanks!

My local guy did the diagnostic (before I realized it was a dealer only thing for the part). He said get the sensor and he'll do the repair for cheaper than the dealer (of course). But he's going off the sensor reading. So how does my local guy know it should be the sensor and not the unit?

He should understand the system theory and operation and have the ability to interpret a wiring diagram as well as understand the measurements and scan data available. Its not overly complex, but not a beginners job either.
