It's used to detect the size of the occupant in the passenger seat. If it detects a child sitting in the seat, it will not deploy the airbag.

The reason the OPDS set a diagnostic code is because it has an internal failure relating to electrical interference. The updated part should eliminate this problem.

On a side note, just because you have a 15-1 15-2 or 15-3 does not automatically mean you have a faulty OPDS unit. There are other possible causes.

the opds unit is in the passanger seat. u have to remove the seat and then the seat covers to get access to the unit. its kinda pain in the ***. i beleive that the opds unit can get tripped if u have a object like a purse or a box tat doesnt weigh a certain amount for the light to turn on.

Does Anyone know how to test either the sensors in the seat or the actualy opds unit with a multimeter?

So I've got two different dealers quoting me two different things.

1) One says just replace the sensor.

2) The other says replace the unit. THEN replace the sensor if necessary.

What's up with that? Is the sensor not part of the unit? If they replace the unit, aren't they covering all options? I'm confused.

And why wouldn't I just replace the sensor? Here B20luda said that it's usually the unit, so what should the user like me do to not pay many times for one problem?

Thanks!

They are shotgunning parts hoping one will fix the problem. Try to Google or Yelp a repair shop in your area and take it there instead......

My local guy did the diagnostic (before I realized it was a dealer only thing for the part). He said get the sensor and he'll do the repair for cheaper than the dealer (of course). But he's going off the sensor reading. So how does my local guy know it should be the sensor and not the unit?

Hopefully because he knows what he is doing.

He should understand the system theory and operation and have the ability to interpret a wiring diagram as well as understand the measurements and scan data available. Its not overly complex, but not a beginners job either.
