Default Non Honda Question

My girlfriends 99 Mercury Cougar spits out black smoke when she drives it. I know this means she is running to rich but how do I fix it. Sorry about posting this up in a honda site but you guys are the only ones who know what you are doing.

Find out how to reset the ECU. That'll probably help. Otherwise, it might be a timing problem, I think.
