Default no vtec:help!!!!

I've been having a problem lately, my vtec sometimes does not engage and when it does it sounds like there is a bunch of pigeons flapping around in my engine. What could this be.

Things I checked:

1) oil level (good)
2) cleaned filter on vtec solenoid
3) bad connections(good)
4) swapped ecu
5) applied 12v to vtec solenoid( solenoid clicks)

What do you guys think it could be. Also I'm not betting any CEL codes.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your timing might be off by a tooth and the pistons are smacking the valves.

Don't worry man, I'm having the same problem with my Type R. It sucks. When you switched ECU's did you use the same type of ecu example you had a p30 before, did you get another p30 or a different ecu? The reason I'm asking if because I was using a chipped p72 and then put my stock one back on and it threw a code 22. i borrowed my friends p30 and no check engine light at all. i then borrowed my other friends working stock p72 and it threw CEL for a code 22. i'm changing my oil tomorrow because i heard from somewhere that dirty and/or old oil can cause this. Good luck!!
