Is it ok to run an exhaust setup without spring nuts and flexpipe?

No. Everytime you accelerate hard, your engine will torque. This will put stress on the exhaust joints. Something WILL break. The best route, adter reading the linked post, is the flex pipe. Before or after the cat. If at all possible, before, in the firewall area. Another option is to have new flanges welded on that can accomodate the spring bolts with a donut type gasket. Either way, the cost will be well worth it.
The owner of a exhaust shop freaked out when he saw that i had no spring bolts between the cat and header. He insisted that something will break and eventually just installed a set of spring bolts for free.
Just because it hasn't broken yet, doesn't mean it won't. do it right the first time.

i had the spring bolts out on mine for the longest time then one day, my header cracked at the flange on the bottom, so i welded it and put a flexpipe in, all good since then
