Default New clutch is soft and slips

I replaced a bearing in the transmission so I got an exedy oem clutch kit to put in. I had 110K on the stock clutch and it was still going strong. I never had any slipping and it felt as good as new. I put in this new clutch and the first time I pushed it to the floor I smashed it because it was so soft - ever pick up an empty box but you expected it to be heavy? I bled the line even though I never disconnected the line from the slave cylinder. No air came out. The clutch engages and disengages just like the stock but it feels weak. I run 6 psi boost on a stock engine and the clutch will slip at max torque. Like I said, the stock clutch never had a problem with it. I've bled the line, checked free play, and checked that the slave wasn't pushing on the lever with the clutch engaged.

were your hands extra greasy when you were handling the clutch disc and pressure plate? if they were, you might have to brun off that excess grease, or pull the trans again and clean it off real well.

No, I tried not to touch the surfaces.

Could it just be a bad clutch? Why would the pedal be easier than the old stock clutch?

i think it might just be the pressure plate because i also bought the exedy oem kit for my crx..i did the 500 mile break in..went out for a good run and the clutch slipped like crazy...my clutch pedal felt almost dead ..so i pulled the tranny and put my stock pressure plate back in..voilia clutch grabs 100x better ...my freind also bought this kit and had the same problem..hope that helps..btw always resurface the flywheel when doing a clutch change...it matters..

I would be willing to guess that the problem is that you didnt resurface the flywheel...

I don't think you have a bad clutch necessarily, but I think the Exedy unit is probably significantly weaker than the FCC part that originally came with the engine. The stock FCC parts test from about 1000 lbs of clamp load (older LS) to about 1240 lbs (GSR, type R) . The stock Exedy isn't as strong as the 1240 but I am not sure off hand what it actually tests. If you got the Exedy sport clutch, you would see a modest increase in clamp load. The chances that your clutch is a "bad one" is very unlikely since Exedy is a OE company and has very good quality control.

I don't think it has to do with the flywheel not being resurfaced. It would have to be pretty bad for that to have any effect at all. Just my $.02

yea, i have the stage 2 Exedy kit ( 3 puck sprung), it also felt very soft when i put it in...and now after 10K miles, the clutch slips like crazy...I have to step on the gas extremely slow under 3K rpm, otherwise it slips.
i have a brand new ACT flywheel so i dont think its that or the fact that i ate up all the meat on the disc...i guessing its the pressure plate but have no clue yet..i will be taking it out soon...

Does anyone know when the ACT 6puck sprung is coming out? or something else of its equivalent?

I would resurface the flywheel and try again.. I ran that exact clutch in my crx and couldnt get it to slip for anything.. And I was running 12.7's with it..

I bought a SPEC stage 3 clutch and broke it in easy for 500 miles and it slips like crazy. Man was I pissed. $300 for a clutch thats worse than my stock clutch.

After a 500+ mile break in it seems to be working well now. It has a stronger pedal and doesn't slip anymore.
