Default vtec with rpm switch?

I'm planning on putting an msd rpm switch to get my vtec working on my h22a..I tried everything to get vtec working and all the wiring is good. only thing I'm getting is a cel for IACV...wich shouldn't affect vtec(unless I'm wrong someone please correct me)would the switch affect my motor and performance ??I have a chip p28 with 4500 vtec but vtec is not working...so I'm planning on having the switch open at 4500. p.s. engine runs hard chirps thru gears and redlines where its suppose too...

does it grind going into 5th? If so then I would say synchro. However, if I remember correctly 5th gear and the reverse gear are on the same countershaft. You may be looking at a needle bearing problem.
