Default need some help with belts

today i went to a mechanic shop and a mechanic said my alternator belt and powersteering belt are cracking, he pointed them out but i didnt think they were too serious where they needed to be changed immediately....the belt has very minor slits in it, nothing wear theirs a tear threw half the belt, i dont know too much about belts im pretty new to cars, can someone take the time out to explain it 2 me, thanks ahead of time

well we need to know what kind of car and if this car has had a swap or not.if it has we need to know what kind of swap.then i will be able to tell you what belt you need.but it looks like your mechanic would've been able to tell you.

well if it has the stock motor then you would get a belt for a 02 lancer.

for example, how would i know if a powersteering belt would need to be changed, like is it suppose to have big rips in it, or are little snips in the belt enough to have to change it

when you look at any belt look for little dry cracks or tears.if you see either replace it.or make it a point to carry an extra alt. belt and tools needed incase
one lets go and will leave you stranded some where.i learned this first hand.

ok so their not suppose to be relatively bigg cracks, but small dry cracks in a belt may mean theb elt needs changing also

The presence of any rips, tears, fraying, or cracking requires the belt to be replaced.
