need help: someone dropped in a pen IN my engine
someone dropped a pen in my engine while I had it open again earlier today. Let's now ask why he dropped it in but I am not going to even crank it knowing that something bad will happen. It fell in to one of the holes behind lifter. I really need to take it out and I am not sure how to proceed about this. It looks like I have to remove the tb, im, headers to get to it.
I heard a thump sound when it dropped in. It looks like it went into some conduit near the header
please help

yikes, I am having a hard time picturing where it fell. Maybe it fell all the way into the oilpan?
You could try dropping it, and seeing if its in there?

ur valve cover was off i guess? did it actually go into the cylinder?
lemme say HAHAHA that sux, start taking off ur head, unless you have a cool grabber tog et in there and get it out..

i have no idea where the pen is located right now, that thump could be anything.
is it possible that it dropped under the head?

Take a long piece of wire, like a coathanger. If you can put it into the same hole, and push it all the way down (don't drop it
), then you'll know that the hole goes all the way down into the oil pan. You'll hope that it does, 'cause it's a whole lot easier to remove the oil pan compared to removing the head...

so it might have gone to the oil pan?
I forgot if it's the 1st or 2nd cylinder, it;s on the exhaust side. There is a deep hole there between the lock nuts, though a little closer to the head lights

Get the biggest baddest vacuum cleaner you can. Make whatever adapter you need to to concentrate the airfllow and try to suck it out of there.
Good luck........... I did something very similar on one of my Vortec V8's last summer .... something that I'll never admit to publicly. But I got the darn thing out with my shop vac.

update: I had an urge to crank it and I did it. seems to run fine so far. I let it idle until it warm up, reversed out of the garage, back in again.
I am hoping it fell into the oil pan, that's a good thing right? If that's the case do I even have to take it out?

lol i would never leave it in there. i'd say you were crazy just to crank it, let alone consider leaving it in there. you're most likely blocking oil flow, at the very least, if not worse. get it out of there asap and dont run the motor any more until you do!
Man, that is nuts... I can't believe that you had the ***** to turn it over, but luck worked out for you, I guess. I have to agree with earlier replies that (since it didn't blow up when you cranked it) it must be in the oil pan. Be that the case, and an easy fix, I might add, why wouldn't you take it out? A foreign piece of plastic in your engine, wherever it may be lodged, is NEVER a good thing.
LOL I CANT STOP LAUGHING MY *** OFF OK OK , FIRST OFF YOUR FIRST WRONG MOVE WAS TO CRANK THE MOTOR OVER, MANNNNNNNN YOU DONT KNOW WHERE THE PEN IS DUDE! the small metal tip can be scoring the **** outa your sleeves right now. DONT EVER DO THAT AGAIN. jezzzz alright going back to what to do.
Theres two tools u can get at sears for future reference, ONE is this long pole with a magnetic tip. I use this to get out screws outa my motor when i drop them in once in a while . For your situation there is also this flexable rod that has claws at the end. The top has a botton you push, When you push the botton the claws open, When you relase the grab. ITS small enough to grab small screws , nuts, anything. I use that allot for getting stuff outa the motor bay, I have bad experiences with dropping ****. MY ADVICE BEFORE WAS TO USE THIS TO SEARCH AROUND FOR THE PEN, BUTTTTTTTTTTTT the pens probally in a million pieces right now. man you a nut, when you change your oil next time u will probally see a million plastic peices come out = (.
BE SAFE AND NEVERRRRRRRRRRRR CRANK YOUR MOTOR AGAIN IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING IN THE MOTOR.

I just figured if the hole was deep enough to lose a pen, it might have been an oil drain passage, where the oil drains back down to the pan. With a long wire, you can see if that hole actually goes down that far.
But wait! You already started the engine?? Oh wow, good luck!

Might be in the coolant passages? heh heh
Try turning your car upside down and shake it til the pen falls out. LOL!
