Need help chosing a motor
Okay I just bought a 1996 civic EX and it is totally stock.....I have some money left over about 5000 dollars and i want to swap it with a JDM motor. So i went to look at Motors and there is a ton that i can choose from. What i was planning on doing was taking the d16 out and putting in a b18a/b for the compression to put like 10-14 psi. Then my friend told me to get a b18c which is a 180??hp engine so that way i could just put a 6 psi in it and still get the same results. And today i was looking and found a b18c5 which has really caught my attention and i really like it. Now is it possible to put this b18c5 into my 96 civic ex and would it also be possible(in the future) to put a 6-8 psi boost on it? I know this is alot at once but i really wanna get started and i don't want to start off on the wrong foot
first, let me say welcome to a fellow newb
I'm not an expert on forced induction, so I can't help with you choose a motor. You might want to pose this question over in the Forced Induction forum. They know all about this stuff over there. Hope this helps.

Wassup, In my opinion I would go with any B18C motor... It doesn't matter whether it's a B18C/1/5/R they're all a good start... The GSR/ITR motor is personally my favorite for FI or NA purposes... If you are planning on boosting the motor later on down the road (and it's staying relatively internally stock) then I would just stick to the C1 as it is normally a lil cheaper... There's no need for the B18C/5 that have the additional 0.60:1 compression and the bigger cams... If you are planning on building it then I would definately stick with the GSR... I'm just totally against B16A/B's and SOHC turbo motors... They just don't have the potential of a 1.8-2.0L turbo motor... We rarely do turbo kits on stock motors but if you don't want to build a bottom end to handle the boost and you are happy with somewhere around 250-300whp then just bump up the boost a few lbs. more then you were originally thinking (say 8-10lbs)... We're all into built turbo motors so that's why I always recommend it... You may have seen it already but oh well... Here's Brian's B18C/EJ6... It's just a 1.98L GE sleeved bottom end with JE 9.0:1 slugs, Eagle rods, Portflow head, and Hondata... It made 536whp/344wtq on 22.3lbs. and has a best of 10.98@133 (on his smaller MT 24.5x9x13 slicks) After we get the new B16 tranny on there with the 26's we're hoping for mid 10's... It's pretty fun when you can roll your car to the track, put on your slicks and go pull a 10 second pass (this is Brian's daily driver and he drives it every day to and from work on 120, hehe) No traction 4th gear on the freeway with 17's is fun too... Scott (streetracer) and I are going to finish up Duc's car this week so hopefully we'll get it on the dyno to see what it can make, his motor is just a tad bit crazier than Brian's... Anyways here are some pics...
Brian's EJ6
Duc and his B18C/EJ6
I made this video several months back so all of the cars were slower back then but if you haven't seen it atleast you can see how FUN a higher boost turbo car is to drive... Duc's car was barely breaking 3rd loose but after this week I'll get up some new clips of it... We'll have to go **** around on the freeway!!!

if you want something to start w/id say b18b and 10-14psi w/stock intervals...if you got the money get the b18c and build it up a little to match the turbo. but yea search around the FI forum for general idea.
aside from cost i've also read in the forced induction forums that the c5 doesn't take well to boost. i'm not sure on the reliability of the source, but as always research thoroughly before you sink money into a motor based off of misinformation. i'm still a newb on this site so i don't know who knows their stuff and who regurgitates what they read (kind of like i just did). honestly i don't remember why they said the c5 doesn't like boost.

That and camshaft overlap, its not a huge deal but you can lose a few psi from it, then again it saves the exhaust from having to scavange the old gasses...they just get shoved out.

go with the b18c1 or c5.
