Default Nasty backfire!!

My setup is in my Sig. and I just recently rebuilt this engine but I'm having trouble getting it to run properly. The head has been milled .005 which cause the cam timing on the exhaust cam to be retarded one tooth. I have tried adjusting the exhaust cam with my adj. cam gears but the engine continues to backfire. Sometimes it will idle for a long time and not backfire untill I give it gas and other times it will backfire at startup and during idle. I am very frustrated. I have replaced my distributor cap and rotor, I have spark, I have fuel. I'm not sure what else to do. Anyone have any advice on what to do?

Try opening up your spark plug gap a bit, sounds kinda dumb but I had a similar problem and it helped.

Really because I bought ngk's for a 99 crv from honda and they were pregapped. I don't think I would need to gap them more but maybe. Can anyone back this up?

.005 is 50 thousands buddy. As for exhaust I am running straight header right now because I can't get my car to run in order to go get the exhaust done.

How does that work? 50/1000 = .05

Look the debate is not about .05 its about .005 taken off the head, if your not trying to help get off my post.

Is it too rich at the idle condition? That could cause your backfire. Too lean and it will pop through the IM. Does it only do it at idle and when you give it throttle, or through the whole rpm range?

No it's not running rich. I just did a valve check also and the problem persists. I just replaced the plugs and let the engine idle for about 5 mins off and on about 5 times and then checked the plugs which were still white. It's deffinitely not coming throught the IM. It will occasionally backfire at Idle and always as soon as you give it some gas. The whole bottom end is completely rebuilt and I haven't been able to drive the car because it keeps backfireing. When I had the head off I couldn't tell if any of the exhaust vavles were bent, they all looked fine to me. Would I be able to tell by looking if they were bent?

HAHA! Machine4321 AND b20ek just got OWNED.

The funny part is, I was originally arguing with Machine4321 only, and then you decided you needed to join in...... Bad idea.

Note: He modified his original post to display the correct number, after he realized that 50/1000 was not .005.

Ok, n00b. This thread isn't about owning people and arguing on who is smarter at math.

Just FYI, what you just said is also false. 50/1000th's IS .05 which is also 5/100. So before you go off trying to do that, you better make damn well sure your information is straight as well.

As for the backfiring, what octane are you running, what is your timing set and and what is your fuel pressure?

Do a compression check with a compession tester and let us know the results.

HTH.

Did you check for a vacuum leak? That can also cause a backfire. Are you positive that the valves are ok, no binding or sicking? Did you check for clearanaces (clay the motor) between the block and head before final assembly. Try the vacuum, that was the culprit when something similiar happend to my motor.

Ok, you may go back on topic now.

Check the things I have stated above to resolve the problem.

I don't have a compression tester and I have everything done at tdc. I have decided to just take it to a performance shop and see what they think. They charge $65 an hour and they are very quick. Hopefully it won't take much more than an hour to figure out the problem. I don't have time for downtime. Gotta get this think runnin! It still needs to be broken in and then I will put the 404 cams in and have the thing tuned.

Oh yea, I'm running 93 octane with a little bit of octane booster, just to be safe, and I don't have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, I need to get one.

I also have a cel 41 for O2 sensor heater. Could this be the problem since it's runnin in loop mode?

Code 41 - heater circuit malfunction..

O2 code = Code 1

If you are throwing code 41, it could throw you into loop mode because the heater contol is not working.

This requires the other 3 wires. Grab the digital multimeter and verify your wires with your jumper harness. I swear that jumper harness is not correct.

A6 - heater control (org/blk wire)
A25 - yel/blk (heater control power source)
For the heater control ground, look at the IAT and test connection with the Grn/Wht wire and the Grn/Wht wire at the O2 sensor.

That is the heater control system on the O2 sensor. This verifies A/F ratios to the ECU (the org/blk) wire.

Code 1 is O2 sensor and that is a 1 wire (WHT wire) going to D14 pinout.

Verify connection with ALL these wires to ensure your jumper harness is accurate.
