got it! the thing that i encircled was the middle part of the shifter mechanism that goes up and down,

now i am putting the cover back but it won't go in perfectly? it has like an half inch gap before i could close it

 

when that happens to me, i usually take the trans where the shift rod connects to, put a philips head screwdriver through the hole where the spring pin goes, and pull it straight back, i believe this puts the trans in 3rd gear, but it makes it easy to close the 2 halves

already did, i'm in the process of putting the tranny back to the car now,
