Default what engine to start with for ls/vtec?

I'm planning on doing ls/vtec sometime in the near future and was wondering what engine to start with i was thinking a b16 since i need to use all components from it, the water pump at what not and the car will be wired for vtec with the b16. Or the Ls cuz its cheaper and i wanna use the tranny from it in hopes of getting better gas mileage on the highway riding at lower rpm's what do you guys think?

I would start with the B16. You can always trade a B16 tranny for an LS tranny and cash.

what about the crv block(non vtec) with a vtec head with pistons & cams, the engine won't rev high, but you WILL have Insane compression!! This has been done to a 95 style civic hb, 13:08 best tme on the 1/4 mile so far.

I've gotten 165 whp out of a stock B16A before (admittedly with ITB's, a Toda header, and a shitload of tuning, but it was done).

Actually, you'll have rather pathetic compression, you will have a lot more displacement and torque though. The biggest issues here are piston to valve clearance and the B20's lack of stability.
