Default My A/C compressor is smoking !!

Hey guys, I have a 00 GSR. It is turbo'd and I have all the a/c lines and stuff still intact.

However, I don't have the a/c fan on right now. I never use a/c since the fan is out. But today i decided to try it and see what happens for a few mins.

So I smelled something funny and when i popped the hood, i saw smoke coming from the a/c compressor.

Is it possible to fry the compressor? Any ideas what's going on?

TIA

My a/c compressor did the same thing after I changed/added the refrigerant. I added too much and the compressor began to smoke. I took out a small amount and then it worked fine. Hopefully you caught it before any damage occurred. You might try checking to see if there is any refrigerant in the system. Is the condenser/radiator still in the car and hooked up?

Probably since you never use it, then it's half froze (as in rust or sticking) and the belt is slipping accross the pulley, because the compressor keeps catching, slowly burning up the belt.

Yup. I've froze a compressor. Smoked the belt in 20 seconds. Black smoke everywhere.

The belt looks fine. I also changed my timing belt 2 weeks ago and the a/c belt looked in perfect condition.

I guess i'll find out after i buy a slim fan and use it.

If it is messed up and I have the fan in there and it still smokes. Will it be just a matter of replacing the compressor or will it damage anything else?

I think you need to recharge your system and find out if tehre is some sort of leak that is causing your compressor to overheat.

I saw it smoking guys. the smoke was white and didnt smell liek burnt rubber.

i would put the fan in and try that before worrying baout bad compressors or recharging it. lack of a fan can lead to VERY high pressures in the system, and htat could do damage.

How does it cause high pressures? All it does it pull air through teh condensor. Havibng the AC on while driving (actually moving) has teh same effect.

no fan causes the pressure to go skyhigh.. driving or not the fan still needs to be there..

the fan is there and has to be running whil the ac is on, i have sat and watched pressures get high enough with no ac fan to cause a brand new CRV engine to stumble. when your high side pressure start approaching 300 psi you got a SEVERE problem.
