Is my block surface good enough for a headgasket??? Need to be decked?
Well I've been scraping away at this ****** for forever. Think it's good enough for a head gasket now? The other thing I'm worried about is the nicks from the razor blade, but the paper gasket should fill that in right?
IMO, you need to get those cylinder walls taken care of, and while it is at the machine shop they can finish cleaning up the deck for you!
The cylinder walls are just like that from the **** I was spraying on the surface. They're much better cleaned, trust me. Any opinions on the surface.
hmm looks like to many scratches to me..u need to clean em up more..i think the head gasket will seat...but just to be on the safe side..no scrape mark..use a 3" blade and go over it..
get some steel wool (scratch pads) (not real heavy, i took an S.O.S. pad and ran it under water for a wile and got all the cleaner out) and put some oil on pads and scrub it for about 5-10 mintes and it will look good as new.

The fine steel wool is a good idea along with a light oil as a lubricant.

take out teh dowel pins, and when you get it all cleaned off, using something such as a scotch brite pad, take a fine file and pressing firm and steady, go from one corner to the opposite corner then from the other corner to the other opposite corner (i.e. left rear to right front, then right rear to left front). That way you can see if you're deck is warped and it allows for a rough surface so the head gasket can seal...head gaskets don't like smooth surfaces...ohh and do the same to your head
Yea that sounds like a good idea. On an old v8 we used a big piece of wood with sand paper on it, so maybe I'll try that too. I might also use the file method. I swear to god I'm never touching an engine with a paper headgasket again!
Deck it, its cheap insurance. Any strange debris or knicks can cause a leak. Better do it now, then after you have already put it back together.
If you clean it up a little more I think you should be fine, but I would get it decked just for the reinsurance. Like the other guy said, would you really want to go threw all that trouble after its installed ?

Ditto. I only called one place a week ago and they wanted $60 just to hot tank!!! To put a head in a machine, close the door, and turn a ****! Screw that ****.

Probably 40-50 to deck/resurface. You don't really need to hot tank, but its a good idea to. I just used lots of degreaser (castrol super clean), and a decent pressure sprayer. Works pretty well.
if you go to the parts store they sell gasket remover ive found that this works rather well...but man you gouged that up pretty bad...id get it decked a few thousands to enusre a clean surface
The gasket will fill in some nicks and scratches. That wont be a problem as long as there not verry close to the cylinder. The main problem should be if its warped or not? The only way fo find that is with a machined stright edge and feeler gauges. i would rather spend the few extra bucks now. than maybe having to pull that beast back out and having it done later. That would really suck! good luck
Yea, it's not that bad actually. I already assembled the block, and I'm going to test for any warpage before I put the head on. But I think it will seal, we'll see
