mitutoyo
okay, i will sum it up pretty quick. this is for engine build. mic the main, rod journal on the crank. do i need .001 resolution or .0001 also the difference on graduation. Starrett has .0001 and Fowler has .0001 pretty confusing on resolution and graduation. I am no where near a machinist, on their website they have the 101, 102 and 103 series. I don't have the funds to go digital. I want something that will work. some of the mic have rachet, and or locks. some is just plain. all engine builders please help... don't tell me to search. because i did. i just refuse to use plastigauge.

I have the fowlers but I never even care about the 4th digit. Most engine specs only go to 100 thous anyways.
ps- I am no pro engine builder, just do it occasionally in my garage.

that is what i wanted to hear. most places don't carry .001 like the fowler. I only saw them in .0001 and Mitutoyo of America says they are on back order from JDM land for 1 month or so. So the .0001 works then and just ignore the last digit.

Actually I think I do remember how to read the .0001 digit. I think it's whatever number of the left horizontal lines, lines up best with the horizontal lines on the right. Hard to explain by words
For what it's worth, my fowler set was about $100 off the snap-on truck, and it's 4 mics, 0"-4", ratcheting, with locks.

FYI...Fowlers are cheap units. It you want accurrate .0001 measurements from mics that you will have forever stick with mitutoyo or Starrett. Have you tryed the link below for the Mitutoyo mic?

Here is a nice Brown & Sharpe 0-4 inch set which should measure all the parts you need for an engine rebuild. These are also high wuality mics which are much better than the Fowler units.

if i were you id definately invest in going digital, it makes things so much easier. we use alot of mitutoyo products at work, all digital, .0001. But honestly, we never even care too much about the fourth digit. Most of the time its all 100 thousandths like mentioned above.
j and l industrial has the Starret mics on sale and get the .0001 graduation. ratchet ends just help you from getting misreadings from over tightening
I have an electric mitsu .0001 0 - 6. I always have to clean the thing to get a accurate measurement past 2.5 - 3.0 Should have got a dial.
