Default Mechanic removed thermostat

My mechanic decided to let the thermostat go on my car cause of random overheating. For some reason he said this was the best decision.

I'm planning to replace it though.

My question is should I keep driving with no thermostat or put one back in ASAP?

If it is a stock daily driver it is HIGHLY recommended to have a thermostat installed. This is especially important in colder climates.

Your mechanic sucks. Put a new thermostat in it.

Not sure if it's the same way with Honda, but with a Mazda engine the problem with running without a thermostat is that you end up not getting the engine warm enough. First of all it's just not the temperature the engine was designed for, and then you might end up constantly running with warm-up enrichment.

That's any water cooled engine. The point of the thermostat is to help the engine reach a temperature and stay there by regulating coolant flow.

Take it out and you get whatever you get, most likely the engine doesn't run right end you tuner hates you too.

Absolutely post the shop you went to, why he would just leave it out than tell you what the deal was is weird, like said above, if its your DD i would install asap, if its a track car i could see it not effecting it much.

thermostat only sets the minimum temp your engine will run at, thats really important as closed loop and everything else is based on it reaching that minimum temp

The engine will run cold, get bad mileage, and gum up the valves and combustion chamber. I know because I tried that years ago on a car when I was too broke to buy a t-stat. I pulled the stuck one out and drilled a hole in the plate, hoping it would stop overheating. What happened was the engine would take a half hour to get to operating temperature, during which time it ran like crap, got terrible mileage, and really gummed up the combustion chambers. Eventually I got a persistent misfire and had to pull the plugs out and soak them in solvent and run a bunch of cleaner through the engine.
