Default Manual V Auto

I'm most aspects it seems manuals have lower ET's than autos stock vs stock and same mods vs same mods. Whats the reason for this? Is it simply faster shifting and less drivetrain loss with the manuals? The general rule is 15% loss so what about autos? 18%? 20%? Also assuming everything is equal, weight, traction, etc. Opinions?
