yeah, people do say that.
your typical 5 angle valve job isnt actually 5 angles on the seat, but rather 3 on the seat and 2 on the valve.

i just paid about $530 for:
bore and hone w/torque plate
micropolished crank
balanced crank, pistons, rods
decked block
CCed chambers
$75 was a use of tig welder fee
also my block was checked for alignment of the main journals do to me wanting i checked because of the sleeving process.

Derek talk to MAX_CFM. He's a master machinist as well as a nice guy.

(I don't call him master porter, for nothing).

Steve Schmidt Racing Engines in Indianapolis

Cylinder bore honing - $150: According to them, they honed the block out .010" instead of boring and then honing, for which they would have to charge a boring fee and then the honing fee on top of that. Makes me wonder how many passes and what grit the finishing hone was.

Install ARP rod bolts - $24
Hone big-end of rod after rod bolt install - $48

Chamfer the crank oil orifi and micropolish the journals - $50

Balance crankshaft - $100

Hot tank - $35

Car Quest/Motor Service - our local machine shop

Flywheel resurfacing - $35

Hot tank - $10 to $20 depending on how soon I need it and what else goes into the tank along with it.

Jim Stewart Race Engines
Hone to size & Finish Hone according to ring material = $75

Valve job (all 16) = $160

Balance crankshaft = $100

Micropolish crank journals = $25

Everything except for the honing and valve job might be really roughly priced since Jim did mostly repair-type work for me instead of a complete jobber.
