Default LSD: is it really worth it?

i've looked into some limited slips, and they are seem fairly pricey, up to 900 for my car. is it really worth the money to have one?

also, has anyone had experience with the phantom grip lsd? i haven't really heard that much about them. are they really just a good inexpensive LSD, or are they more of a "you get what you pay for" item?

use the search.

this has been discussed over and over.

To simply answer your Q's

1. is it worth it? well do you want the power going from your engine to slip to the wheel with the least traction (1 wheel burnout) or do you want it to be devlivered to the wheel with the most traction (movement instead of burnout or even 2 wheel burnout).
2. as far as phantom grip... it modifies your existing dif to be a lsd type. this is good because you have a lsd now but it's also bad because the stock dif was not designed to hande the stress exerted on a limited slip dif. so they break more often. however you could pbbly but 2 phantom grip/stock dif combos before you spend the same amount of money on a quaife or a kaaz.

YES!! very much so. LSD makes a big difference in cornering, take off, and just all around driving. One of the better investments that I made.

Phantom Grip sucks ***. They will destroy your tranny and are not an LSD. They are more like posi-trac for FF cars. IMHO steer clear of these.

I love my Quaife......it rained here in Albuquerque, NM a little last week (and we hardly ever get rain) so I went out and played with the LSD in the rain a little.....wooha! Get one, you won't regret it if you like the car and plan to have it for a while......

What are you doing with the car? For everyday driving I see NO need for it. However if you autocross, track, or drag race the car it will be a worthwhile investment.

i disagree, as benefiting from an lsd does not necessarily pertain to track only conditions. traction is always an issue especially with daily driving (ie. rain, slippery surfaces, etc.). it's much safer to have one than not. (not to mention the benefits of having one on the track!). one of the best mods you can do in my opinion.

The only LSD you should look at is an OEM ITR one or a Quaife. If you want to learn more, check out http://www.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm

yeah i'd like the ITR one, but i doubt it would work with my accord tranny. looks like i'm saving up for the quaife. a lifetime warranty makes handing over 900 bucks a lot easier

There are 3 types of LSD: 1 way, 1.5 way, and 2 way. The 2 way is constantly on... both accel. and decel. of the car. Kind of like posi-trac except this ONLY works when it needs to. The 1.5 works mainly on accel. but does provide a bit of decel. anti slippage. And lastly the 1 way is geared for accel. All three generally provide the same service on accel. it's just the decel that you have to think about. If you are a circuit racer then 2 way is amazing. If you are like most people a 1 way is pretty sufficient for what you do. I have seen Quaife, Kaaz, and ITR LSD put side by side. They differ mainly in clutch vs. gear driven LSD. The gear driven is a little louder and a little slower to respond, by that I mean there's a little slop in movent of the gears. I believe Quaife, and ITR are both gear driven. Kaaz is a clutch type LSD and provides faster response. However, you will need to maintain a clutch driven LSD as the plates will wear out. I'm sure that I don't have to go into the gear driven tear apart as most of you can imagine that. The clutch LSD contains little clutch disks inside the housing. These disks act upon each other and create a clamping force to distribute power. The clutch type LSD can finnesse one wheel and throw more power to the other, slipping wheel, more effeciently. That is a quick synopsis of LSDs and what not.

only if you drive the car.

Yes, always, regardless of conditions. The only reason it isn't standard equipment on all cars is the price.

I don't think ITR will work in an Accord tranny.

So when you say that the gear driven LSD's are louder, how loud is that? Is it a annoying loud, that would get old on a daily driver?
Okay, I really want a LSD, and I am on a budget, but overall I think lifetime warranty is more important that saving money. So how much is the quaife, and does anybody have a link to where I can order one????
Also, is this a install that i should leave to a shop?
I am excited about learning about LSD's, because lack of traction is something that has always annoyed me since I bought my SI. I have to rev it up not to bog from a start, and if I rev it up and don't slip the clutch enough I start losing traction, it is a pain in the ***, even for daily driving.
Thanks for the info guys

not bad. I have ITR in my car, which has not int., and it's not bad. All you reall hear is a little whine, which is pretty quiet for the most part. I don't want to let you think that it is like this loud blender noise... if you're in tune with your car, you'll hear it.

is this a install that i should leave to a shop?
do you feel comfortable taking the tranny case apart and moving some **** around? If not, take it to a shop. I've installed a couple of em, not too bad overall.
