ls-vtec vs. type-r
Well I'm certainly in favor of getting all the displacement we can out of these little engines, I just think it should be done smartly. The 37cc LS/Vtec picks up entails way too many comprimises in other areas for my tastes, and really that's a 2% increase in displacement. Now if our hero here were to pick up the b18c5 and sleeve it to 86mm then he'd have a 229cc(12.7%) increase in displacement w/o any of the negatives associated with a frankenmotor. Isn't that a much smarter way to go?
for the money type R is the way to go .
R block= oil cooler... better oil pump...better water pump...block hand assemble by honda's best... crank made for high revs.
ls block=needs all the above
R tranny= better final drive,lsd
type r head is already ported and polish and has all the highperformance on the head already,springs/retainers go to 9rpm with ease, 65mm tb ported intake manifold, mild cams.
will last you 300,000 miles if taken care of properly 60k if raced often
ls vtec maybe 60k and about 15-20k if raced often
considering the type R is cheaper i would def def go with a R
just my opinion if i had your same choice .
dammm wish i had 5gs .

ls vtec can be reliable....my b20vtec has 25,000 miles on it since april 2002....will have 32000 by april 17....
if you really want to do ls/vtec, then do it...there are many conflicting arguments to both sides so i think that you should do it and learn from trial and error..it costs money but it all comes down to you and what you really want to do, im goin ls/vtec and im building the motor over time in my garage so that there is no rush and i can put as much time into as possible....just do what you want and keep us posted, good luck
