Ls vtec..... not impressed.....
Ok so I just got a new to me hatch,
The engine is a b18b1 bottom end bored .20 over.
pr3-3 b16 head.
Gsr trans
chipped p06 no idea if its tuned or not.
My last honda was also an ek hatch but with a h22
My h22 would have ran circles around this ls/v set up...
The car seems to run great, just really not that impressive power wise.
my buddies 09 4dr si would probably walk me...
Im not sure if my expectations are warped or what, but I even went as far to confirm mechanical and ignition timing just to make sure it wasn't off because the car just isn't that impressive. lol
Now it could very easily need a tune, Like I said I have no idea whats really on the chip thats in there now.
Are these ls/v's in my build scheme just not that fast? I mean Im guessing at this rate at best Id run a low 14. maybe. Idk probably just my best way to express how "quick" it is..
Would a tune produce a significant gain, or do I just need to wrap my head around the fact that an ls/v isn't really that much better than a stock b16/si...
Basic I/H/E is the only mods besides the build of the engine.

Re: Ls vtec..... not impressed.....
honestly man, I wish I knew. I am the 2nd owner of the car since the work was done.
All I can tell is what I see, I have a receipt for the engine build which shows it was bored .20 over, but there is no list of parts or anything like that.
I can tell I have stock pr3 cams cause it says that on them, lol.
I would imagine someone who spent $3,000 on their credit card to put the motor together would have spent some coin on parts, but I just have no idea really.

Re: Ls vtec..... not impressed.....
well I already have a gsr trans I believe, it may be a b16 I'm not 100 sure, but in 5th gear going 70mph i sit at 4750, which I know is either gsr or b16 very short gearing.
It has a hydro clutch
I think cams is the next step, I for sure need a tune, but I may invest in a few little mods before then.

1.8l vs 2.2.l in the h22 so its not really a fair comparison. Sounds like a setup with potential though, ive heard good things, about going high compression like pr3 pistons or other in a lsv. Should be able to break 200hp with some minor tweaks. But its always going to be a small engine, got to have reasonable expectations. Could make nice power on boost, stock lsv is great for boost. plus you already have the gsr trans, one of the best trans.

I mean I guess I do need to keep that in mind, I just figured a semi built ls/v w a gsr trans it would be pretty comparable, and I will say it may just be the torque that I feel the biggest difference which ya is a give in.
And the more I drive this car, I think it is an expectation thing.
My last car was a 2012 335i turbo, before that was a 2014 370z, I got tired of a car payment so I wanted to go back to this, so Its for sure an adjustment.
It honestly feels like to me this car belongs in the 4-7000 range, when I keep it revved high it is a lot more fun obviously so thats why I figure the torque curve is just an adjustment.
Which is why I wanted it when I bought it I knew I was 10 steps ahead on the engine build.
I am considering boost, or pulling it and swapping in an h22.
I still have the CC receipts for the engine build and it was built may of 2014 so its still new.
Im not asking for much and I really don't want to "build" a motor, I just want a fun semi fast daily. So thats why Im thinking a small 5 psi pieced together kit.
I looked at a new intake mani and cams and thats already $1000 for that Id rather just boost it honestly.

what makes you think it is even built at all?
chances are its stock pistons that are oversized, so basically a stock LS bottom end and a stock b16a head. You have no clue if it is tuned or not either. could be a crappy base map and a bone stock head swapped engine, which is not really impressive, its just a starting point. need to at least get on the dyno and see if the tune is worth anything to start with.
you also need to have an idea of compression to even choose cams.

I am gonna call the shop who did the motor tomorrow and see what they can tell me
Next step is to throw like 5psi at it haha

Re: Ls vtec..... not impressed.....
Hopefully the shop can tell you more.
I can see 3k on stock rebuild though. Figure cost to r&r engine, dissassembly, parts, machine shop cost, and all the markup from the shop. Depending on location i can see 750 for r&r, 750 at machine shop, another 500+ in parts for the rebuild (gaskets and pumps etc), then figure the ecu, head and bolt ons etc...
