I have a completely stock B16A2 thats having an issue of a loud knock/tapping noise while under light to heavy load. I cannot pin point it but it sounds like it coming from the head. It doesnt sound like a noise that a rod would make but ya never know. It does not go away during vtec either. It is not consistant like a valve tick. At light to no load it doesnt really make much of the noise but definitely under medium to wot. Its very sporatic in loudness of the knock which is a sign of something else other than a valve. If i disconnect the sparkplug from cyl #2 is goes away. Here is a video of it. Thank you for any help.

Check your #2 spark plug gap and wire resistance. Take the dizzy cap off and check the contacts on the inside for corrosion or wear.

If you can Swap the #2 spark plug & wire with a known good plug and wire and see if that clears up the knock. Could be a bad wire or an improperly gapped or fouled plug.

 

Could you imagine that being any kind of rod knock? Maybe a spun bearing? My oil pressure is good, i can beat the **** outta the car up to 8200rpms and the noise doesnt change. I would imagine that if it had something to do with a rod or bearing that the motor would have bitten the dust already with some redline stress.

I will check the plug wire and spark plug today. Ive already checked the dizzy. It actually has a new cap and coil.

It sounds like a metal slapping noise and not so much actual knock. Hopefully today we'll see. I do not wanna rip apart the motor just yet.

 

Have you checked the ignition timing? Also check the appearance of the plugs. You could have a clogged injector that is causing a cylinder to run lean and knock. If I recall correcctly, that car does not have a knock sensor.

I do recommend revving it like that with your issue.

 

check your valve lash also, although I'm not sure why it goes away if you remove the spark plug wire?

True, but i was just throwing that out there of how much of a beating it is taking and how i dont think it would be a rod issue because of this.

Today i will buy new plugs and check out that injector. It DOES have a knock sensor but has not thrown a cel yet.

 

I tried swapping a wire and now the damn thing wont start. PERIOD. Everything's back to normal, i even reset the ecu, pulled plugs, put news ones, still nothing. WOW.

 

HTat was the cheap easy check. Now if it's not spark/fire related then it's a fuel or mechanical problem. Did you get a chance to swap that injector yet?

 

I havent gotten around to the injector just yet. I will try everything in my power to diagnos this, but it definitely sounds like a metal knocking.
