It is actually harder than it looks. Plus, the resin is enough to make you pass out. A special resin is used, a special mold material is used, and release agents are used so the carbon doesn't stick to the mold. The curing is done in a heated booth, etc. There is a reason that carbon fab guys make so much $$$.
wet layup carbon fiber is just like working with regular fiberglass, and does not give you any more strength over regular fiber glass, only looks.
that is the only cf you'll be able to make without the use of realy expencive equipment.

sorry to bring this thread back to life, but wondering if anyone else has any other info or personal experience with it. i just bought 4 yards of 12k 19.7 oz 2x2 twill carbon fiber and a gallon of medium epoxy resin and clear coat. i am using it for panels for my sub boxes and amp rack. never worked with it before, or any kind of epoxy for that matter, but for the amount of $$, hope it comes out good.
I would like to know too..........I'm interested in trying it, but would like to hear some feedback and other people experiences good/bad first.
I would suggest you start by practicing with some fiberglass first. I have done a few pillars and other Misc. pieces. Curved pieces are when it gets real tricky... Spend that much money and have it not look good is a waste. Good Luck...
