I understand that you can not legally install an older engine in a newer car, but does that apply to an engine from the same gen car with the proper emissions crap? I course installed the EGR and wideband o2 sensor, but will this be a problem for an inspection? If they run the VIN on the engine and see that is from 2001, will I get in legal trouble? Thanks, I do NOT need problems with the law.

It basically goes by the generation not the engine. All that matters is if it's "functionally the same", which normally means does it work functionally the same with the same ecu. No smog tech is going to look at the engine year stamp when smogging your car anyhow unless you tell them to look.
