Default KA24DE Engine help...

Okay, first off, I am a n00bie to Honda-Tech. I was been lurking around here for awhile and I have to say that this site is one of the most informative and helpful site on the web for enthusiasts. I own a 02 Spec-V. Here is my problem...well, not MY problem, I am just trying to help out my friend.

My friend owns a 98 240SX (s14) with the original KA24DE engine. Normal bolt-ons i.e. CAI, header, exhaust. About 2 weeks ago, he was driving in the rain and hit a HUGE puddle. The car just "conked" out. He tried to turn it over and nothing happened. He parked it and left it. The day after, he tried to crank it....again...nothing. Next day, come back, do the same...and it worked. Here is the problem: it is really really loud i.e. it ticks, kinda like bent valve sounding, only louder...really louder. How do we diagnose the problem? What should we look for? We know that the block isn't cracked...from the outside at least. Please give us some advice on what to look for. Thanks in advance.

Oh boy. you have some serious problems. Do you mean your engin swallowed water and stalled? If so, after 3 days you restarted it, there was time for rust to form all around in the cylinders. Uh, at least change your oil right now, but for the rest, I wouldn't know, I would tend to think it's pretty much over with this engine.

You may have sucked up some water, damaging you valve train. The most common problem on most Nissan's is weak rocker arms. I've noticed a few DOHC's with the same problem, but mainly due to excessive heat. Try asking at http://www.freshalloy.com, they'll give you a lot more insight to the problem.

Sounds to me like he bent a rod. Don't worry, the noise will go away once the rod snaps and breaks a hole in the front and back of the block! (i speak from experience)

Also, check the forums on http://www.240sx.org for nissan specific help.

Hydrolock = bent valves or connecting rod.

An SR swap would be cool...but you can find KA's for pretty cheap since most 240 guys have gone with an SR and have a spare KA just sitting around collecting dust. Shop around for a deal...

Finally someone that has a Nissan. Tell your boy to get a sr20det and boost it to 14psi.
I did my boys swap in two days. He runs 13.2 with a down pip and apex n1 at 14psi. $2500 for a front clip. don't froget to get the drive shaft sr20 is bigger.

Consider the engine to be a loss. But as the other guy said, these motors are quite cheap these days. By the way, the KA does not use rocvker arms.
