I just traded transmissions with a friend. He hooked me up with his GSR /w a quaife. It worked perfect for him... no problems whatsoever. I just put it in my car today... and every gear is perfect except for reverse. It absolutely will not go in reverse. It will just not click into place. All the other gears are fine.... no grinds, LSD feels great. It just won't go into reverse.
The actual shifter will not go down far enough to go into reverse. It feels like it will go about halfway into reverse, and if I let the clutch out it will bearly start to grind, but it will not move at all. If I push it halfway into reverse, then I have to push it all the way into 5th before I can go back into neutral. I've tried going into all other gears and then reverse, but nothing.
The linkage is not obstructed... the tranny went on without a hitch. It worked prefectly on my buddy's car a week ago. I dropped my old GSR tranny, and it worked fine this morning.

so your using the same clutch? kinda sounds like a clutch problem or maybe something in the hydraulic system. Reverse gear is very simple with no synros and stuff so it should be able to get pulled in....esp. if he just used it with no problems.

I know he used it with the quaife himself. Also, I put a new clutch in a week before this (I was still using my old tranny... I'm getting tired of dropping transmissions)
Could something be up with thte throw-out? I put a new one in with the clutch a week ago

a friend of mine had the same problem ... i fixed it by ramming it fairly hard repeatedly into reverse with that car on and gently and slowly letting off the clutch ... probally not that great of a fix but again it wasnt my car and he wanted it fixed... it worked but would i do this to my car .... NO! by the way he doesnt have the rev problem anymore
try this
with the car off
go into 4th then reverse (make sure your pushing the clutch in)
if it still hangs on the selector for reverse go back into 4th and repeat

I've tried going into reverse from 4th... no dice.
Are you saying I should repeat it over and over again until it hopefully gives? Should I force it in as posted above?
Should I pull the tranny again and try to figure out what's going on inside? I.e., is it possible to be fixed without dropping the tranny and cracking the case? If not, I have a few hours to pull it tonight...

do NOT force it
bending a shift fork is the last thing you want to do..
you might have to crack the case and see whats going on inside...sorry

I will drop the tranny and try to crack it tonight... but I don't know what to look for. I've got my old GSR tranny I can compare it too... but that's about it.

Well, I opened up the tranny... and talked to Rocket for a while. I can remove the selector and shift the 5th/reverse fork into 5th and reverse fine. Can anyone give me some pointers for what to look for as far as the problem goes? I'm stuck

Well, I can shift it by hand with the fork (with the selector removed). If I put the selector back on, I can't do it (simply because the casing is not there to hold all the moving parts in place). If I put the casing back on and shift it by hand, then I can get into every gear but reverse. Could it be damage in the casing? I've got an old GSR tranny I think I will pull the casing off of and compare side-by-side tonight. Any help would be greatly appreciated
