Default just bought new engine what to do before install?

I just bought an h22a. Its sitting in my garage right now. I took off the intake manifold its very dirty, black grease all through it. Has mildew where spark plugs at. What should i do before i put this engine into my car?? Its not in as good shape as i hoped. its a 1991 h22a.

well, since i'm not there to see the engine and analize it, i would say, rebuild it, seriously, think about all the effort you're going to be putting when swaping that engine and realize it had a bad ring, or whatever, i dunno.
I'm a mechanic and i wouldn't mind putting it in and out a couple of times, but if i had the money i would rebuild it, if not, at least i would change the seals and maintainance stuff, like water pump, timming belt, balancer belt, etc...

BTW: do you do your own work, or you'll be paying for it? (no offense, just to give you better pointers)

well, in that case a rebuilding is expensive, remember that if you're going to do things, do them right the first time, definetly i would change maintainance stuff just to be on the safe side.

Good advice for cheap insurance... spend the $150 and replace a few things and dont worry about them.

get a haynes manual and change the timing belt and spark plugs have the heads cleaned at a local shop. do everything you possibly can. it isn't that hard to work on these engines the hardest part is getting them out the car and this engine already is out.

how much does it cost to have the heads cleaned? I planned on changing the belts, spark plugs, spark plug wires and of course changing all the fluids.

there is so much maintenence-wise that is so much easier with the motor out. Timing belt, manifold gaskets, belts, etc. Just get the manual for your car and go through it. It is very detailed and has pictures too! Good Luck
