Jg Valvetrain Vs. Supertech
Sup,
I currently own a head with a JG valvetrain on it. Now im starting to hear some bad thigns about JG Valvetrains, and might go Supertech. People always complain about JG heads dropping a valve, cracked retainers, etc...
I know im going to loose alot of money if i do go Supertech, although if my Jg head fails, then might as well do it.
Im putting the head onto a benson sleeved 3500 dollar internals block, id hate to loose it because JG failed on me...
I can go with Supertech, but id rather use the price difference to put it in something else.
What do uou think?

JG springs and retainers are good. I personally run them in my R motor that sees over 9000 on the dyno and when racing. and its also my street car. I have put over 10k miles on this set and they show no wear of breaking, wearing where the keepers go, or anything like that.
I know of a couple other race cars that use them too; one of which was Matt Kennedy's 270+whp motor.
I've installed many sets in different customer cars and never had a problem. I always keep a set on the shelf and am going to use them on my 85x92 build next year.
Cliff Notes: I use JG, I have installed many sets of JG. I have NEVER had a problem with JG. I will continue to us JG.

ha, i run Supertech valve train and love it. I just bought a JG head (JG valvetrain included) also, and i was thinking the same thing, if it is worth the time to swap my super tech valvetrain over to JG head?
So bump for people with experience with JG.
My setup is a SOHC if that matters.

it's the way JG prep their valve guides and the valvestems. They can explain it better than me. That's what usually causes these dropped valves and cracked retainers.
it's the method that they've used over the years that makes it harder on the valve guide and keeper causing the change in valve geometry and dropped valves/cracked retainers. You can ask them not to do that and use standard recommended Honda installed heights, clearances and to "prep" the guide or stem without changing the recommended retainer to seal and retainer to valve guide clearances. Having the right spec at the valvespring is huge. make sure your coil bind spacing is at least 0.06 at your cam's max lift and the spring has plenty left over for coil bind limit. are you using serrated face retainers that won't spin as the spring compresses and releases? If you're spending cash, you may want to PVD nitride coat the retainer or spring.
secondly, it may be that your head is being used as a "training intern's guinea pig head for one of the staff that they are bringing up through the ranks...an apprentice who has done enough practice ones and shown competence to start working on customer heads.
I'd ask to see who will work on the head and make sure you get one of the older more experienced guys.
This isn't unique to JG. Every shop has this.

besides reading this thread, i never knew anything about jg valve train. personnaly i use supertech.
i have reved my motor to almost 10k with supertech's under 20psi not mention a few 3rd to 2nd shifts, lol, (was an accident)for sure supertech is good.

Not that I should be feeding your paranoia, but the JG retainers are soft. They scratch/ding really easy when you try to install/remove them.
I ebay-ed mine and swapped in skunk2 retainers. The skunk2's are a lot thinner, but seem to be stronger because they didn't even scuff when I installed them.
I didn't care for the JG retainers at all. They were so soft that the springs dug into them and I had to pry the retainers off with my fingernail. The springs were literally embedded in the retainers.
I'd say it's a good idea to get better retainers. I like the JG valves though
